Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What do you get about hard work now that you feel like you totally missed a few years ago?”
What to listen for
If they talk about consistency mattering more than motivation, or about effort paying off slower than they expected, that shows real growth in how they understand achievement, less magic, more patience.
If they connect it to something specific like sports, an instrument, or a hard class, ask what changed their mind, the story behind the shift is often more revealing than the insight itself.
A shrug is fine, sometimes teens know something has changed in how they think without being able to name it clearly yet.
What this tells you
How their understanding of effort has matured shows how much ownership they're taking over their own growth and progress.
