Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“When you picture having your own place someday, what does it actually look like?”
What to listen for
If they describe specifics with enthusiasm, it means they've genuinely started imagining independent adult life, which is a healthy, normal part of growing toward autonomy.
If what they describe looks a lot like home, take that as a compliment rather than a lack of imagination, it might mean home currently feels like a good model to build from.
If they say they haven't thought about it, that's fine too; some teens are more present-focused, and that's not a red flag.
What this tells you
This shows you what kind of independence and stability they're already picturing for their own future.
