Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time you had to compromise with someone, and how did that actually feel?”
What to listen for
If they describe it as fair even if a little disappointing, they're building real understanding that compromise isn't losing, it's sharing, which is a mature and valuable insight.
If they say it felt bad or unfair, that's honest and worth exploring gently, maybe the compromise wasn't actually balanced, or maybe it's just hard for them to give up getting their way completely.
If they say "I don't know," offer an example, like splitting screen time or picking a show, and ask how that one felt.
What this tells you
How they describe the feeling of compromising shows whether they're learning to see give-and-take as fair rather than as losing.
