What to listen for

If they can recall one, they're building real trust that limits aren't just obstacles, they sometimes open up something even better, which is a mature, hopeful way to see boundaries.

If they say 'no' always just feels bad with no silver lining, that's honest, and it's worth exploring one specific example together to see if a better idea really did follow.

If they say "I don't know," offer an example you remember, like a canceled plan that turned into a fun surprise, and ask if that counts.

What this tells you

Finding a good outcome after hearing 'no' shows whether they're starting to trust that limits can lead somewhere good, not just somewhere disappointing.
