What to listen for

Whatever they describe, colors, characters, comfort over style, wild mismatches, pay attention to how confidently they say it. A clear, quick answer shows a solid, settled sense of their own taste. A hesitant answer, or one that references what a friend likes instead, can mean their sense of personal style is still forming through comparison to others, which is completely normal at this age.

If they mention wanting to wear something that makes them feel brave, strong, or special, that's a lovely clue into what they want clothing to DO for them emotionally, not just how it looks.

If they say "I don't know," ask what their favorite outfit ever was, and why they loved it.
