Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Is there a sport or game you wish you were just naturally better at?”
What to listen for
An honest answer shows they're comfortable admitting a gap between where they are and where they want to be, that vulnerability is worth meeting with encouragement, not immediate tips.
If they sound frustrated rather than just wistful, that's worth exploring further, it might mean comparison to others (siblings, teammates) is weighing on them more than the skill itself.
If they insist they're fine with everything as is, that's worth accepting at face value, not every kid needs to want to improve at something to feel good about themselves.
What this tells you
This shows you where your child feels a gap between their ability and their ambition, and how that gap sits with them.
