Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What was the moment this week you felt closest to us?”
What to listen for
If they can point to a specific small moment, a car ride, a joke, someone showing up for them, that tells you connection doesn't need to be a big event; it's built in the ordinary stuff, and that moment is worth repeating.
If they struggle to think of one, resist the urge to feel hurt or to supply an answer for them. Just let the silence sit, and treat it as useful information about what's been missing lately, not as a verdict on the whole relationship.
A vague "I don't know, it was a normal week" is common and fine, you can follow up gently with "was there anything you wish we'd done together?" another night.
What this tells you
This shows you exactly what kind of moments actually make them feel connected to you right now, so you can make more of those instead of guessing.
