Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Is there someone at school you wish you knew better, but haven't figured out how to get closer to?”
What to listen for
Naming someone specific shows real self-awareness about their own social world, and trust that you won't make it weird or immediately try to engineer a playdate.
If they seem a little embarrassed admitting it, that's normal, wanting connection can feel vulnerable to say out loud at this age. Stay light and curious rather than jumping to advice.
If they say no one comes to mind, it might mean they feel content with their current circle, or it might mean the idea of wanting more connection feels risky to admit. Either is fine to leave sitting for now.
What this tells you
This shows you where your child is quietly hoping for more connection than they currently have.
