Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there something you've learned from sports, art, or a hobby that applies way beyond just that activity?”
What to listen for
If they can draw the connection clearly, it means they're already thinking in transferable lessons, not just isolated skills, that's a sign of real reflective thinking.
If the lesson is about failure, patience, or teamwork, notice how they talk about applying it elsewhere in their life, that's them building their own internal playbook for hard things.
If they say it's just about the activity itself, that's fine too; not everything has to be a life lesson, and that's a healthy attitude as well.
What this tells you
This shows you what deeper lessons they're extracting from the things they practice, beyond just the skill itself.
