Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What does loyalty actually mean to you when it comes to your friends?”
What to listen for
If they have a clear definition, showing up, not talking behind someone's back, defending them, it means they've thought seriously about what makes a friendship trustworthy, not just convenient.
If they mention a time loyalty was tested, whether their own or a friend's, that real example tells you more than any abstract definition could.
If they say they haven't really thought about it, you could ask what a disloyal friend would look like instead, sometimes the opposite is easier to define first.
What this tells you
This shows you what they expect from the people closest to them, and by extension, what kind of friend they try to be themselves.
