Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Has there been a time you shared something even though you really didn't want to?”
What to listen for
If they describe choosing to share despite not wanting to, they're building real generosity that costs them something, not just easy giving, that's genuine values in action.
If they admit they resented it in the moment, that honesty is valuable, it shows they're wrestling with generosity rather than faking it, which is a more durable kind of growth.
If they can't think of an example, ask about a smaller moment, like sharing snacks or attention, big sacrifices aren't the only kind that count.
What this tells you
This shows you what generosity actually costs them right now, and whether they're willing to pay it anyway.
