The prompt

“What's something you'd still do even if nobody else agreed with it?”

What to listen for

If they answer fast and sure, that's a teen who feels solid in their own values right now, they know what they stand on, and that confidence usually means they feel like their choices actually belong to them. Let them talk without adding your own opinion on top of theirs.

If they hedge, or say something like "I don't really have one," that's worth noticing gently rather than pushing on. Some teens haven't had to test their principles against real pressure yet, and some just aren't ready to hand you that answer tonight, both are fine, and "I don't know" is a real answer too.

If they bring up something that surprises you, resist correcting it. Even if you'd frame it differently, what matters most tonight is that they feel respected as their own person with their own compass.

What this tells you

Whatever principle they name, or don't, tells you how much they trust their own judgment right now, and whether they need you to just witness that instead of weighing in on it.
