What to listen for

If they answer readily, they're telling you there's a gap between how they're seen and who they actually are, and what they need is for someone to see past the surface read, starting with you. Don't jump in with your own theory about them; let them define it.

Some teens will bring up something that stings a little to hear, maybe even involving family assumptions. Stay curious instead of defensive, this is them trusting you with something real.

If they brush it off or can't think of one, that's fine too, not every night needs to crack something open.
