Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How do you think about helping people you'll probably never actually meet?”
What to listen for
A thoughtful answer shows a teen developing real empathy that extends past their own circle, that's them wanting their actions to matter for something bigger than themselves, and it's worth reflecting back with genuine respect, not just approval.
If they mention something practical, like donating or volunteering, ask what drew them to that specific cause rather than just nodding, the reason usually reveals more than the action itself.
If they say they haven't thought about it much, that's completely normal, this kind of thinking often develops gradually, not all at once.
What this tells you
Their answer shows you the shape of their growing sense of purpose beyond themselves, and whether they feel like their choices can actually make a difference.
