Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Tell me about a time you changed your mind about something you used to be pretty sure about.”
What to listen for
A real example shows genuine intellectual flexibility, they're learning that changing your mind is a strength, not a weakness, which will serve them for life.
If the change came from a friend, a book, or something they saw online, notice what's currently shaping their thinking, it's useful information about their influences.
If they insist they never change their mind, that's worth gently exploring further, everyone does, and naming a small example together can model that it's safe to do.
What this tells you
This shows whether they feel safe growing and updating their opinions, or feel pressure to stay consistent no matter what.
