Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What does having fun actually look like for you now, compared to a few years ago?”
What to listen for
If they can trace a clear evolution, from active play to hanging out, from group games to deeper talks, they're comfortable with their own changing idea of joy, which is a healthy part of growing up.
If they seem a little sad naming what they've lost, that's worth just sitting with, not every change in what's fun needs to be mourned, but it's okay if it is a little.
A "pretty much the same honestly" is a totally fine answer, not everyone's sense of fun shifts dramatically at this age.
What this tells you
How their definition of fun has changed shows you how their sense of what fills them up is evolving as they grow.
