What to listen for

If they can talk through it honestly, jealousy, rivalry, or awkwardness they navigated, they're building real maturity around comparison, and trust that admitting envy doesn't make them a bad friend.

If they downplay it or say it's never happened, that's fine, but keep the door open lightly since competition among friends is nearly universal at this age.

If strong feelings come up, resist minimizing them with "it's not a big deal", competitive feelings toward friends can feel confusing and even shameful, and deserve to be taken seriously.
