Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Who's someone you can just sit with and not talk, and it's not even weird?”
What to listen for
Naming someone specific, a friend, a sibling, maybe even you, means they've found a relationship where they don't have to perform or entertain, which is a sign they feel genuinely accepted by that person.
If they can't think of anyone right away, that's useful to know softly, it might mean they haven't had much practice with comfortable silence, not that something's wrong with their friendships.
Either way, resist the urge to ask follow-up questions about that person right away, let the moment of naming them be enough for tonight.
What this tells you
Who they can be silent with shows who they trust enough to just exist around, without needing to prove anything.
