Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“In a group project or a team, are you more the one steering things or the one who's happy to go along with a good plan?”
What to listen for
A confident answer either way shows self-awareness about their natural role, and neither leading nor following is better, what matters is whether they sound at peace with which one they are.
If they describe switching depending on the group or the task, that flexibility is a strong sign of social maturity, not indecision.
If they sound frustrated about always being stuck in one role, that's worth gently exploring, they might want to try on the other role sometime and not know how to ask for the chance.
What this tells you
How they see their own style in a group shows how confident they are in the particular way they contribute, without needing to be like everyone else.
