Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there a conversation you hope we get to have someday, maybe not yet, but eventually?”
What to listen for
If they can name something, even vaguely, that shows real trust that the relationship will keep growing and that there's room for harder or deeper conversations down the road, they're not writing you off as someone they'll outgrow talking to.
If they mention wanting to talk about something specific someday, a big decision, a part of their life you don't know much about yet, resist the urge to pull it out of them now; just thank them for telling you it's coming.
A "not sure" is completely fine, just the fact that you asked plants the idea that the door stays open.
What this tells you
A future conversation they hope for shows they see this relationship as something that keeps deepening, not something fixed in place.
