What to listen for

Naming something like feeling calm, feeling proud, feeling free, or feeling included shows real self-awareness about what actually drives their choices day to day, that kind of insight is rare and worth honoring gently.

If they mention something like wanting to feel in control or wanting to feel needed, that's a window into what's currently a little scarce in their life, worth noticing without trying to immediately supply more of it.

If they've genuinely never thought about it, that's a completely fair response, you can let the question be a seed that grows later rather than needing an answer tonight.
