Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there a contradiction in yourself, like two things about you that don't totally match, that you've actually made peace with?”
What to listen for
A thoughtful answer, like being both an introvert who loves performing, or someone tough who cries at movies, shows real self-acceptance and comfort holding complexity, rather than needing to be one simple thing.
If they describe still feeling uneasy about the contradiction, that's worth just normalizing gently, most people are a mix of things that don't perfectly line up, and that's not a flaw to fix.
If they say they can't think of one, you could offer one of your own first, modeling that contradictions are normal, even for adults, often helps.
What this tells you
A contradiction they've made peace with shows how much they've grown into accepting the full, sometimes messy truth of who they are.
