What to listen for

If they describe something like freedom, doing meaningful work, or having good relationships, that shows they're already defining success on their own terms rather than borrowing someone else's definition, a strong, healthy sign.

If money or status comes up anyway, that's worth exploring without judgment, it might reflect real anxieties about security that are worth taking seriously, not correcting.

If they say they don't know yet, that's completely normal, this is exactly the age where that definition is still being built.
