Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“How does our family usually handle it when someone's in a bad mood? Does that feel like it works?”
What to listen for
If they describe a calm, understood pattern (give them space, check in later, it blows over), that's a sign the family currently has healthy, predictable ways of handling hard moods, which gives them a real sense of safety. If they describe tension or walking on eggshells, take that seriously and without defensiveness, this is valuable, honest feedback about the emotional climate at home.
Notice whose bad moods they mention, if it's mostly about a specific person, that's worth understanding a little more, gently and without making them feel like they're 'telling on' anyone.
If they say it doesn't really work, ask what they'd want instead, their answer might be a genuinely useful idea.
What this tells you
This tells you how safe and predictable emotional ups and downs currently feel at home, which shapes how they'll handle their own moods later.
