What to listen for

If they can name someone and explain what's kept the friendship steady, shared history, trust, just always being there, that's a sign they understand what makes a relationship last, which is real relational wisdom for their age. Notice the warmth in how they talk about this person; long friendships like this are often a quiet anchor of stability for them.

If they say they don't really have a friend like that, that's worth noting without alarm, some kids' closest friendships are newer or still shifting, and that's normal, not a red flag.

If they mention effort it's taken to keep the friendship going (through a move, a fight, different schools), that's worth genuinely praising as real relational maturity.
