Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Where does our family pet actually fit into the story of this family, in your mind?”
What to listen for
If they describe the pet as a comfort, a confidant, or a source of joy, that's a real relationship worth honoring, they need to know that bond is seen as significant, not just "cute."
If they get sentimental or emotional talking about it, let that be okay without rushing past it, pets often hold feelings teens don't attach to people as easily.
If they're more matter-of-fact about it, that's fine too, not everyone processes affection for pets the same way.
What this tells you
How they place the family pet in the family story shows you where they find uncomplicated comfort and companionship.
