What to listen for

If they tell a spontaneous story with energy, that openness to wandering off-script is a great sign of a curious, unguarded mind, celebrate the story itself, not just the lesson in it.

If the adventure involved a little risk or mischief, resist the urge to focus only on the danger, they need to feel like the story is fun to you too, not just a liability to manage.

If nothing comes to mind, ask what they'd love to just wander into if they had a totally free day, sometimes imagining it is just as revealing.
