If they describe choosing to let something go or soften their point for someone's sake, that's real emotional maturity, they need that choice named as strength, not weakness or losing an argument.

If the story involves regret over a time they chose being right over being kind, meet that honestly without piling on, they need to feel like recognizing it now is enough, not something to keep beating themselves up over.

If they say being right still usually wins for them, that's honest and worth exploring gently, without judgment, that's just where they are right now.
