Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How do you think about respecting someone who sees the world in a really different way than you do?”
What to listen for
If they describe genuine curiosity about different viewpoints, that openness is a real strength worth celebrating, they need to know that respecting difference doesn't mean agreeing with everything.
If they draw a clear line where respect stops, like around harmful beliefs, that discernment is healthy too, they need to feel like having limits on tolerance isn't the same as being closed-minded.
If they seem unsure, that's a good sign of honest thinking in progress, no need to steer them toward a tidy conclusion tonight.
What this tells you
How they handle people who see the world differently shows you how secure they feel in their own beliefs without needing everyone to agree.
