“After a really long day, what do you actually need from me, space, a snack, silence, something else?”

What to listen for

If they can name it clearly, "just leave me alone for twenty minutes" or "I want you to ask but not right away", that's them trusting you with real information about how they work, which is a gift, not a rejection.

If they seem surprised anyone asked, or say "I don't know, I've never thought about it," that's fine, you've just planted the idea that their need for space is legitimate and worth naming.

Either way, resist the urge to argue with their answer. The goal here is only to hear it, not negotiate it down.
