Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What's a family habit you complain about but would secretly be sad if we stopped doing?”
What to listen for
If they name something right away, even with an eye-roll, it means they feel secure enough in the family to admit affection without it being uncool, that's a real gift of honesty.
If they laugh and say "okay fine, actually..." before answering, that hesitation is just them protecting their image a little, not holding back from you emotionally.
A genuine "I can't think of one" is rare but fine, you can leave it open and revisit some other night without making it a bigger deal than it is.
What this tells you
This shows you which parts of ordinary family life quietly make them feel like they belong, even when they act annoyed by it.
