What to listen for

If they can tell that story easily, notice how they describe the repair, did they apologize, did the friend, did it just fade and get better? That process reveals how they understand conflict: as something survivable and even useful, rather than something that ends relationships.

If they say no fight has ever helped, that might mean conflict still feels scary or final to them, which is worth knowing gently, not as a problem to fix tonight, but as context for how you show up next time they're upset with you.

If they go quiet, it may be that the memory is still a little tender. Let them decide how much to share.
