Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Why do you think telling the truth matters even when it feels scary to do it?”
What to listen for
If they connect it to trust, like "so people believe me later," they're developing a real, internal reason to be honest, not just fear of getting caught.
If they focus only on avoiding punishment, that's normal at this age, but it's worth gently reframing honesty as something that protects trust, not just something that avoids trouble.
If they say "I don't know," ask about a time telling the truth was hard for them specifically, and build the conversation from there.
What this tells you
Why they think truth matters shows whether honesty is starting to feel like their own value or still mostly about avoiding consequences.
