Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old

The prompt

“What does that excited, can't-sit-still feeling right before your birthday actually feel like in your body?”

What to listen for

If they can describe physical sensations (bouncy legs, tingly tummy, wanting to talk fast), that's excellent body-awareness for this age, it's the same skill they'll later use to notice nervousness or anger, just practiced here on a fun feeling first. Celebrate the noticing itself, not just the excitement.

If they mostly talk about the presents or party rather than the feeling, gently steer back once with "but what does it feel like INSIDE you", some kids need a nudge to go from the event to the sensation.

If they say "I don't know," ask them to compare it to another feeling, like "is it more like when you're about to jump in a pool, or more like Christmas morning?"
