What to listen for

Whatever memory they choose, notice what made it stick, was it the people, the food, a specific moment, or just the feeling of everyone together? That detail tells you what actually makes celebrations meaningful to them, which is useful for planning future ones.

If they mention feeling included or having a special role (blowing out candles, being the center of attention), that shows how much being seen matters to their sense of belonging. If they mention a quieter detail, like a hug or a joke someone told, that shows connection matters more to them than spectacle.

If they say "I don't know," name a recent celebration yourself and ask what part of it they liked best, narrowing helps.
