What to listen for

A kid who invents wild, chaotic rules with total confidence is showing healthy creative freedom, there's no wrong answer here, and that's the whole point. Notice if their rules involve everyone winning somehow, or a way for the underdog to catch up, that can reflect a wish for fairness even inside their own made-up world.

If their rules are highly structured and detailed, that can show they enjoy order and control, especially if home has felt a little unpredictable lately, not a concern, just a data point.

If they say "I don't know," start making up one rule together as a game, and let them take over once it gets rolling.
