Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“What's something that makes your heart feel warm and full all the way up?”
What to listen for
Listen for whether their answer involves people (a hug, being with family, a friend being kind) versus things or activities (a favorite toy, a fun trip), the people answers are a strong, clear sign that connection is currently their biggest source of security and joy.
If they struggle to describe the feeling itself but can point to what causes it, that's completely fine, feeling words are still developing at this age, and naming the cause is a great first step.
If they say "I don't know," ask about a specific recent moment, like right before bed or during a hug, and see if the warm feeling shows up there.
What this tells you
What makes their heart feel "full" usually points straight at their biggest current source of comfort and belonging.
