Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“What would you say to someone who just won't share with you?”
What to listen for
If they suggest asking again, asking why, or asking for a turn later, that shows they already have some real tools for handling frustration without escalating. If their answer jumps quickly to grabbing or getting upset, that's typical for this age and a good moment to gently offer words they could try instead, without shaming the impulse.
Listen for whether they consider WHY the other kid might not want to share (maybe they're not done, maybe it's new), that shows growing perspective-taking, a more advanced skill than just wanting fairness for themselves.
If they say "I don't know," ask about the last time this happened for real and what actually happened next.
What this tells you
Their plan for handling a non-sharer shows whether they currently reach for words first or feelings first when frustrated.
