What to listen for

Notice the topic itself less than the energy behind it, genuine excitement about learning something (even something silly, like how slugs move) is a wonderful sign of a healthy, curious mind that feels free to wonder without needing it to be "useful." That freedom to be curious for curiosity's sake is worth protecting and encouraging.

If they pick something related to a fear or worry (like wanting to learn about storms, or about a sickness), that can be their way of processing something scary through information, worth a gentle, calm follow-up.

If they say "I don't know," ask what question they've asked a grown-up recently that didn't get a full answer.
