Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“If you could trade chores with your sibling for a week, which one would you want and why?”
What to listen for
A quick, specific answer shows they've actually been comparing workloads and thinking about fairness between siblings, completely normal, and worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as complaining.
If their reasoning is really about the chore being easier, that's straightforward, but if it's about wanting to feel trusted with something bigger, that's worth noting and maybe actually trying.
If they say they wouldn't trade, ask what they'd change about their own chore instead, there's often a smaller tweak they'd genuinely appreciate.
What this tells you
This shows how fair they currently feel the division of responsibility is between them and their sibling.
