What to listen for

If they ask for a story again and again, they're building their sense of belonging to something bigger than just today, it helps them feel rooted, like they're part of a family story that started before them and keeps going.

If they ask surprising or funny questions about the story (what you wore, what was scary, was it silly), that curiosity is them trying to understand who you were and how that connects to who they are now.

If they say "I don't know" or seem uninterested, try starting the story yourself tonight, sometimes hearing it once sparks all the questions next time.
