What to listen for

If the question is about their childhood or what things used to be like, they're showing curiosity about belonging to a bigger story than just their own life right now.

If the question is more personal, like what makes them happy or what they were scared of as a kid, that's them looking for connection and to feel like grandparents are real people they can relate to, not just distant grown-ups.

If they say "I don't know," suggest a question yourself and see if it sparks a better one from them.
