Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“What's something about being in this family that makes you feel proud?”
What to listen for
If they mention something you do together or a way the family treats each other, they're showing they feel like being part of this family is something good and worth belonging to, which is a big marker of security.
If they struggle to name something, that doesn't mean anything is wrong, it just might mean this isn't something they've been asked to reflect on before, so give them time and maybe share what makes you proud of the family first.
If they say "I don't know," ask what they'd tell a friend is cool about their family.
What this tells you
This tells you how much pride and belonging they currently feel about being part of this specific family.
