Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Is there something tricky you want to practice tomorrow to get a little better at it?”
What to listen for
If they name something specific with enthusiasm, they're showing they feel motivated and capable of improving, which is a great sign of a growth mindset forming early.
If they seem hesitant or worried about failing at it, that's a good moment to remind them that practicing means it's supposed to be hard at first, and that's exactly how getting better works.
If they say "I don't know," suggest something you've noticed them wanting to improve at and ask if that feels right.
What this tells you
This shows how ready and willing they feel to lean into something difficult on purpose.
