Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you could invent a machine that does your least favorite chore forever, what would it look like and what sound would it make?”
What to listen for
A detailed, joyful invention (with sound effects and moving parts) shows an imagination that likes control and cleverness, a kid figuring out how to "beat" a hard task with cleverness instead of just avoiding it.
If the chore they pick reveals real frustration ("because I always have to do it and no one else does"), that's worth taking seriously, a small conversation about fairness in chores might be overdue.
If they can't pick a chore they dislike, that's a nice sign chores don't feel like a burden right now, no need to dig further, just enjoy the invention talk.
What this tells you
The chore they want to eliminate points to where daily life feels most unfair or tiring to them right now.
