The prompt

“If you and your brother or sister (or a friend) had to split one treat perfectly fairly, how would you do it?”

What to listen for

A kid who suggests careful splitting, taking turns picking, or "one cuts, one chooses" is already building a real sense of fairness and problem-solving that will serve them for life, worth genuine praise.

If they say "I'd just give them the bigger piece" or "I'd take it all," it's not necessarily selfishness, it might reflect how safe they feel about having enough, or how much practice they've had at sharing without losing out.

If they don't have a sibling or the scenario feels far off, swap in a friend or a pretend scenario, the answer still reveals how they think about equal versus fair.
