The prompt

“If you were in charge of the rule about shoes and mud and mess, what would you change about it?”

What to listen for

A thoughtful compromise ("shoes off but I can wear my socks everywhere") shows a kid capable of understanding a rule's purpose while still asking for a bit more freedom, a great sign of growing judgment.

If they want to scrap the rule entirely, it might just be normal kid pushback, or it might mean the rule feels arbitrary to them, a quick one-sentence reminder of why it exists ("so the floor doesn't get slippery") can help it land better.

If they can't think of anything to change, they may feel like house rules are already fair, which is worth noting and even telling them you noticed.
