Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“If your friends remembered you for one thing years from now, what would you want it to be?”
What to listen for
If they name a quality like loyalty, humor, or being someone people could count on, that shows they think about their impact on others and care about being valued for something real, not just for being popular or impressive.
If the answer is more about a memory or a moment they created, that shows they find meaning in making others feel good, which speaks to a deep sense of connection.
A joking or deflecting answer is fine, teens often protect earnest hopes with humor, and that doesn't mean the hope isn't real.
What this tells you
The legacy they want among friends reveals what kind of belonging feels most meaningful to them, being liked, being trusted, or being remembered for something specific.
