Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you were in charge of punishments in our house, how would you make sure they felt fair?”
What to listen for
A thoughtful answer (matching the punishment to the mistake, giving a chance to explain first, no yelling) shows a kid who craves fairness and predictability, not just leniency, that's worth genuinely listening to and maybe even adopting a piece of it.
If they say there'd be no punishments at all, that's common and not concerning, ask a follow-up about what should happen instead when someone makes a big mistake, to see their instinct toward repair versus consequence.
If they mention feeling like punishments are currently unfair, take that seriously and follow up calmly later, without getting defensive in the moment.
What this tells you
This shows whether discipline in your house currently feels predictable and fair to them, or confusing and scary.
