If they always pick the leader, hero, or rescuer, they may be craving a sense of control or capability that feels harder to access in real life, pretend play lets them practice being powerful and competent.

If they always pick the caretaker, helper, or gentle character, that often reflects real warmth and empathy already present in who they are day to day.

If they say it depends, that flexibility itself is a good sign, they're comfortable trying on different roles rather than needing to always be the same one.
